Plans originated to open Plovdiv university in the 1880’s but it wasn’t until 1945 that the medical school was established and today the university is the third largest in Bulgaria. Plovdiv University is named after the clergyman and historian Paisii Hilendarski. Plovdiv University has been institutionally accredited by the National Certification and Accreditation Board in 2001. The university has pharmacy, dentistry, medicine and public health departments. The university’s mission includes the “streamlining of the scientific, cultural and historical traditions”.

Study Medicine at Plovdiv University

The university has its own hospital; St George Academic Hospital with 1,200 beds. Students are encouraged to enter their work into the annual Youth & Science competition, which is run by the Youth Scientific Association. Medical studies last for six years and are taught in English. The first two years focus on core scientific subjects and pre-clinical study, followed by three years of clinical study. The final year consists of medical rotations in clinical settings. Upon completion of the course students will be given the title of Doctor of Medicine (MD) and receive a master’s degree.

The city of Plovdiv was built around 7 hills and has scenery to reflect its rural outskirts. Hiking in the hills is a popular pastime, with Nebet Tepe being the most famous peak. As you wander down into the city, a combination of ancient Roman sites such as the Theatre of Philippopolis is now host to opera evenings in the city. Kapana is the creative heart of the region with galleries and restaurants galore. This contemporary district is interspersed with ottoman-era houses and an ancient bath house.
