The Charles University was established in 1348 making it the oldest university in central Europe. It is named after Charles IV, the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia. The university has six faculties dedicated to medicine which are located in Pilsen, Prague, and Hradec Králové.
The faculty of medicine in Hradec Kralove started practicing in 1945. The faculty is closely associated with the University hospital which opened at the same time. Many notable doctors such as Jan Bedrna and Rudolf Petr worked here. This institution is at the forefront of innovation and as such in 1967 Prof. Josef Erben was the first in the country to use haemodialysis.
