Founded in 1581, the University of Szeged is one of the oldest research universities in Hungary. According to QS World University Rankings, SZTE was the best Hungarian university in 2021. Amongst alumni are Nobel prize winner Albert Szent-Györgyi who was the first to isolate Vitamin C. The university has 12 Faculties, covering 700 research areas at 19 Doctoral Schools. The university states that their mission is to ‘cultivate science and internationally competitive research work and to advance its research university nature.

Study Medicine at the University of Szeged

The Szeged medical university has been running medical studies in English for over 30 years. The medical degree takes place over 12 semesters. The first two years focus on fundamental knowledge of science and anatomy. From the third year onwards, regular clinical practice is integrated into the timetable. During the final two semesters, students work in medical specialities and clinics accordingly. The university is equipped for international students with a population of 4100 students from different countries.

Szeged is Hungary’s third largest city and its name is said to have originated from the Hungarian word for corner, referring to the turn of the river through the city. Interestingly, Szeged is known as the home of paprika and has a marvellous reputation for food across Hungary. THe first mention of the city was in 1183 and since then it’s grown into a cultural centre of Hungary. One of the events which attracts many visitors includes the ‘open air festival’ which began in the 1930s.
