The Comenius University in Bratislava is Slovakia’s oldest and largest university, founded in 1919 respectively. The university is named after Jan Amos Comenius who was a 17th century Czech philosopher and teacher. Faculties include medicine, law, philosophy, education, pharmacy amongst others. The university is home to over 2,000 international students. In 1992, Comenius University became the first institution to take part in the UNESCO Chairs programme.

The university has stated that their mission is ‘to provide first class education for future healthcare professionals.’ Since 1993 the university has offered medical studies in English. Studies take place over six years. Focuses during the degree include fundamental studies about human anatomy, pathological processes, preventative disease methods and diagnosis.

Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia and its largest city respectively. The city lies at the bottom of ‘the little carpathian’ and is situated on either side of the RIver Danube. Uniquely it borders three countries (Hungary, Austria and Slovakia).The city is characterised by the juxtaposition of gothic buildings and a majestic castle weaved amongst communist-era buildings. Notable sites include Bratislava Castle, St Martin’s Cathedral, The old town hall, Eurovea waterfront and Grassalkovich palace.
