The Medical University in Pleven was founded in 1974, following on from the opening of City Hospital in 1865. The campus includes a University hospital with over 1000 beds and clinics in major medical fields. 6,000 students have graduated from the medical school successfully. The course lasts for six years, including 2 years of preclinical training, 3 years of clinical training and the final year dedicated to clinical practice. The school’s motto is Doctor Honoris Causa which means for the sake of honour.

The university combines tradition with modern facilities, including clinics and research centres allowing students to enjoy a combination of preclinical studies accompanied by clinical practice including diagnostic and therapeutic methods.

Pleven is located in the centre of Northern Bulgaria. It’s considered an agricultural area with low limestone hills surrounding the city. The city is located 30km south of the Danube river and its history can be dated back to the 5th millennium BC. During the middle ages, the city became a centre for trade and commerce and this is when it gained its current name, Pleven. Notable landmarks include the historical museum, the Pleven Epopee building which was built in 1877 and the remains of Storgozia Fortress.
